Stuart Janney III and Phipps Stable co-owned 2013 Kentucky Derby winner Orb as well as multiple graded stakes winners Carriage Trail and Criminologists.

Stuart Janney’s parents owned the extremely popular champion and Hall of Fame filly Ruffian. The Janneys also owned such standouts as Icecapade and Private Terms. His cousin Ogden Mills “Dinny” Phipps was a prominent owner and breeder and the chairman of The Jockey Club. Janney is the vice-chairman of The Jockey Club, a member of many racing organizations and the chairman of Bessemer Trust Co. and Bessemer Securities Corp.

Janney owns approximately 80 horses, some in partnership with Phipps Stable or Seth Hancock of Claiborne Farm.

Janney’s most successful runner was Coronado’s Quest, who won the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational Stakes and Travers as a 3-year-old in 1998. Coronado’s Quest also captured the Dwyer (G2) and Riva Ridge (G2) Stakes at three and three graded races during his 2-year-old season. Other multiple graded stakes winners owned by Janney include Ironicus, Data Link, Air Support and Hit It Rich.

In 2013, Janney picked up his first win in the Kentucky Derby when Orb, rallied for a 2 1/2-length win in the first jewel of the Triple Crown. Orb finished fourth in the Preakness before rallying for third in the Belmont Stakes.

Ogden Mills “Dinny” Phipps led  the distinguished stable, whose roots are in Wheatley Stable started in 1926 by his grandmother, Mrs. Henry Carnegie Phipps. His father, Ogden, was a prominent owner and breeder, who raced in his own name.

Dinny Phipps’ great-grandfather, Henry Phipps, was a childhood friend and business partner of Andrew Carnegie, and they made their fortunes together in the iron and steel business in the 19th Century. Mrs. Phipps was the driving force behind Wheatley Stable until her death in 1970. Her top horse was Bold Ruler, talented on the track and later a prominent stallion and sire of Secretariat.

Ogden Phipps owned nine national or Eclipse Award champions, including Buckpasser, Easy Goer and Personal Ensign. As Ogden Phipps approached his late 80s, he wanted to make sure that his family continued it tradition in racing and began breeding in the name of Phipps Stable. The stable was then owned by Dinny Phipps and his children, and Daisy Phipps Pulito continues to manage the operation following Dinny Phipps' death in April 2016. The stable’s long list of top horses includes Rhythm, Inside Information, Smuggler and Storm Flag Flying.

Phipps Stable in 2013 earned its first win in the Kentucky Derby when Orb charged from off the pace for a 2 1/2-length win in the "Run for the Roses." Orb finished fourth in the Preakness before rallying for third in the Belmont Stakes.
