Minnesota-based Jeff Drown was part of a partnership with Don Rachel that campaigned $850,000 purchase Structor, who won the Grade 3 Pilgrim Stakes and then closed powerfully to prevail by a half-length in the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. In 2021, Drown got a taste of the Kentucky Derby trail when Zandon finished second as a 2-year-old in the Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct.

Zandon finished third in the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes Presented by Lamarque Ford at Fair Grounds on Feb. 19, 2022, after an awkward break from the starting gate. Zandon then shipped to Kentucky for his final prep for the 2022 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve. He dropped well off the pace in the $1 million Toyota Blue Grass Stakes. April 9 at Keeneland but closed with a powerful rush under Flavien Prat to reel in Smile Happy in deep stretch. He completed 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.35 on a muddy track to earn 100 points toward qualifying for the first jewel of the Triple Crown May 7 at Churchill Downs and punch Dorwn's ticket to Louisville.
