Eugene Melnyk may be best known as the owner of the National Hockey League's Ottawa Senators and as the founder of Biovail Corp., which became Canada's largest publicly traded pharmaceutical company. He launched Trimel Pharmaceutical and is the chairman of PurGenesis Technologies and Fusion Brands.

Melnyk also is recognized for his philanthropy and is the leading donor for Anna House, a unique childcare facility at Belmont Park providing daycare for backstretch employees’ children.

Melnyk is one of North America’s leading owners and breeders and has been active in the sport since the mid-1980s, winning two Sovereign Awards as Canada’s top owner and one as top breeder. His Melnyk Racing Stables manages more than 1,000 acres on its two farms in Florida and Kentucky.

Melnyk has campaigned more than 60 graded stakes winners, including Flower Alley (sire of Kentucky Derby winner I’ll Have Another), Speightstown (2004 Eclipse Award-winning Sprinter), and Sealy Hill (the only Canadian Triple Tiara winner and the 2007 Canadian Horse of the Year). Recent stable stars include multiple graded stakes winner Leigh Court, who he later sold at auction, and 2016 Grade 1 winner Lukes Alley.
