Paul Pompa Jr. earned success in horse racing during the 2000s with stakes winners such as D'Funnybone and Backseat Rhythm, but became best known as the co-owner of 2008 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Big Brown. Pompa bought the Boundary colt as a 2-year-old in training in 2007 for $190,000, and sold an interest to IEAH Stables after Big Brown won his debut at Saratoga later that summer by 11 ¼ lengths.

Big Brown went on to win the Florida Derby, Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Haskell Invitational – all Grade 1 stakes – in 2008, and retired with earnings of over $3.6 million.
In 2016, Pompa’s Curlin colt Connect emerged in the 3-year-old division over the summer and fall with wins in the Curlin Stakes, Pennsylvania Derby, and Cigar Mile. He also campaigned homebred New York-bred stakes winner Send It In and 2020 Peter Pan Stakes winner Country Grammer.
Pompa owned the Brooklyn-based trucking company Truck-Rite Corp. He named Big Brown after the United Parcel Service’s logo and color after renewing a contract with the shipping company for his business, and the horse’s name turned into a memorable marketing campaign with UPS during the 2008 Triple Crown season.
Pompa passed away suddenly on Oct. 9, 2020.
