Phillips Racing Partnership—John W. Phillips and his sisters Dianne Albrecht and Debbie Bower—are part of one of Thoroughbred racing’s most storied families. Their grandfather, John W. Galbreath, was a property developer and owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team from 1945 to 1985, an era that included legendary outfielder Roberto Clemente. One of Galbreath’s best racehorses, Roberto, was named after Clemente and his name is prominent in countless Thoroughbred pedigrees.

Galbreath founded Darby Dan Farm just outside Columbus, Ohio, in 1935 and expanded to Lexington, Ky. in 1946 with the purchase of 618 acres of a renowned farm responsible for four Kentucky Derby winners.

Darby Dan, complete with its historic barns and buildings, remains in operation under Phillips, an attorney who serves on several racing-related boards. The farm breeds, boards, buys, and sells Thoroughbreds for clients and family members. In addition to Roberto, who is buried on the property, Darby Dan has been home to prominent stallions over the years and will welcome 2011 Preakness Stakes winner Shackleford for the 2013 breeding season. The Ohio division is no longer used for Thoroughbreds.
