On the racetrack, they show a fierceness and tenacity that draws fans to them. The will to win pushes them to the front each time, showing the physical talents and mental fortitude that grabbed the attention of those who picked them out among thousands of young horses. These fillies and mares race at the highest levels, bringing their owners, trainers, and caregivers great victories that send them straight into the history books. They bond over early morning exercises and afternoon achievements.

Some of the country’s top fillies and mares will square off Nov. 5 at Keeneland Race Course in the $2 million, Grade 1 Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff.

The mist fell in soft sheets from a black hole of a sky, and the atmosphere was more befitting the Scottish Highlands than the San Gabriel foothills. It was 5:45 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, the morning of Flightline’s penultimate workout at Santa Anita Park. I had arrived extra-early, to insure a good vantage point at the rail bordering the ¼-mile chute, the area where the horses enter the racetrack from the barns.

The weekend racing fans wait for all year long is almost here. The top horses in the country and many from around the world will travel to Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky., for the 2022 Breeders’ Cup World Championships.

Based on the pre-entries released Oct. 26 for the 2022 Breeders' Cup World Championships Nov. 4-5 at Keeneland, a pair of showdowns await in the event's two biggest dirt races.
