all in Breeders' Cup

For the sixth year in a row, America’s Best Racing is challenging some of the brightest minds in horse betting to come up with their top three picks for key races every weekend leading up to the 2022 Triple Crown and then continuing through the 2022 Breeders’ Cup World Championships. The handicappers face off in what we like to call the “Big Race Showdown.”

The $500,000, Grade 2 Lukas Classic Stakes Saturday at Churchill Downs may not be a qualifying race for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic five weeks later, but it certainly has implications because the top three contenders could be be running in that race depending on how they perform in this one.

Saturday is shaping up to be a big day of racing at “Belmont at the Big A,” a meeting in which traditional Belmont Park races are being hosted by Aqueduct as the former completes a construction project.

Last year, it was trainer Brad Cox’s venerable Plainsman who reigned in the Grade 3 Ack Ack Stakes at Churchill Downs, a race named for a horse from the late 60s and early 70s, who was called Ack Ack after the action of World War II artillery pieces.

The setting might be different this year, but Saturday’s edition of the Champagne Stakes remains as important as ever in the chase for the TVG Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and the 2-year-old championship.
