all in Breeders' Cup

The eyes of the racing world will shift westward this Saturday as Santa Anita Park will host the Grade 1, $400,000 Santa Anita Handicap. This 1 ¼-mile contest was first held in 1935, when its $100,000 purse (equivalent to $1.9 million today) made it the world’s richest race.

One Lucky Storm precipitated a new era. On Dec. 4, 2004, the 8-1 longshot became trainer Brad Cox’s first winner after going out on his own.

Medina Spirit impressed with his heart, not with his final time, in repelling Roman Centurian and Hot Rod Charlie to win a three-way photo in the $100,500, Grade 3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes Jan. 30 at Santa Anita Park.

The 2020 Longines World Racing Awards ceremony, held Jan. 26 for the first time entirely online and co-organized by Swiss watch brand Longines and the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA), awarded the title of 2020 Longines World’s Best Racehorse to Ghaiyyath.

The Breeders’ Cup Classic is often thought of as the All-Star race for American horse racing, and for good reason. With its massive purse and enormous prestige, it’s designed to bring together the top horses at the end of each season.
