all in Breeders' Cup

Each week a panel of media members, horseplayers, and Breeders’ Cup World Championships officials release a poll tabulating their votes on the nation's top contenders for the 2020 Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Tom Pedulla presents five takeaways from the exceptional turf racing at Kentucky Downs on Saturday and other major developments this weekend:

The horse racing world like all other areas of society continues to make changes in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and public health crisis. Most racetracks currently operating are doing so without spectators, and have instituted strict safety screening protocols for essential employees who are already on the grounds to provide daily care for horses.

One of Thoroughbred horse racing’s most prestigious international events is coming back to the Bluegrass in 2022.

Keeneland, set to host the Breeders’ Cup World Championships Nov. 6-7 in Lexington, will again be home to the championship event after an already scheduled 2021 running at Del Mar, it was announced Sept. 12.

The Runhappy Turf Sprint Stakes at Kentucky Downs may be a six-furlong race, but it’s not your daddy’s turf sprint. While some turf sprints are contested on hard courses with tight turns that favor speed horses, the Runhappy Turf Sprint is contested on a hilly, deep course and starts at the top of the one turn, all of which could work against speed types.
