For She’s a Julie, 2020 did not start off on the best of notes.

She made her 5-year-old debut May 23 in the Shawnee Stakes at Churchill Downs, where she was the quite logical 2-1 second choice behind 2019 Alabama Stakes winner Dunbar Road.

The Grade 1 Ogden Phipps Stakes has been historically one of the most important races for older females on the dirt during the first half of the year with each of the last three editions won by champions or fillies who would go on to win an Eclipse Award.

The Grade 1, $300,000 Ogden Phipps Stakes Saturday at Belmont Park – a “Win and You’re In” qualifying race for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff this fall – drew an extremely talented and well-matched group of six fillies and mares, each one a graded stakes winner.

Though summer racing was off to a sluggish start thanks to COVID-19 it is now reaching full gear, highlighted by top-level contests like Saturday’s Ogden Phipps Stakes at Belmont Park. The race is expected to attract some of the best fillies and mares from across the country to compete for Grade 1 glory.

The horse racing world like all other areas of society continues to make changes in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and public health crisis.
