all in Triple Crown

It’s called “The fastest two minutes in Sports.” Twenty horses gather in the starting gate on the first Saturday in May for the Kentucky Derby. Time seems to freeze as jockeys, horses, and everyone else waits with bated breath for the gates to open. Each horse represents a journey. A triumph over the odds. The result of midnight dreams. The culmination of a selected breeding program. The completion of schooling and training. The consequence of careful daily care.

Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen owns more than 9,700 victories since he produced his first winner at New Mexico’s Ruidoso Downs in 1986, a North American record that may be untouchable when he is done.

For the sixth year in a row, America’s Best Racing is challenging some of the brightest minds in horse betting to come up with their top three picks for key races every weekend leading up to the 2022 Triple Crown and then continuing through the 2022 Breeders’ Cup World Championships. The handicappers face off in what we like to call the “Big Race Showdown.”

The 148th running of the $3 million, Grade 1 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve brings together a full field of 20 Saturday, May 7 at Churchill Downs. In addition, there are two horses that are also-eligible and can run if any starters in the main body of the race withdraw by 9 a.m. ET on the morning of Friday, May 6.

BloodHorse news editor Byron King presents his final Derby Dozen for 2022, with a look at his leading contenders for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve on May 7.
