all in Triple Crown

America’s Best Racing and handicapper (and avid gambler) Monique Vág team up to provide horseplayers with their best bets of the weekend.

Vág will identify her top picks as well as at least one longshot play of the weekend, a nice opportunity to swing for the fences on a win bet or to take a shot with a show bet. She also will occasionally look for strong exacta plays for the weekend or try to spot a nice opportunity for other wagers.

This Weekend’s Bets

Never enough time.

Brad Cox has been in a hurry since he grew up in the shadow of Churchill Downs and his father, Jerry, would take him to the track whenever possible.

Cox could not wait to get his racing career started. He worked as a hotwalker at 13 before being quickly elevated to groom. He was 24 when he opened his own stable.

For handicappers, there’s no greater satisfaction than betting a longshot and seeing your unheralded selection take first prize. Whether it’s a $5,000 claiming race at Mahoning Valley or a Grade 1 stakes, beating the odds and uncovering a longshot winner is much more satisfying than betting a bevy of favorites.

The Return to Normalcy Tour at Churchill Downs starts Friday when the Longines Kentucky Oaks returns to its traditional spot on the eve of the first Saturday in May. A field of 13 will be on hand for the famed Grade 1 stakes that has once again attracted a stellar collection of the best 3-year-old fillies in training and turned the 1 1/8-mile stakes into a highly attractive betting affair.

If Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale gets his wish, many people will be sleeping comfortably the evening of May 1 – himself included.
