Following the Breeders’ Cup, trainer Brad Cox had a clear top-10 prospect for the 2021 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve with probable champion 2-year-old male Essential Quality. Less than a month into the New Year, it would appear he now has two Derby contenders.

After a brief holiday season lull, top-level horse racing kicks back into high gear this week with the stakes-packed Pegasus World Cup Invitational card Saturday, Jan. 23 at Gulfstream Park.

Every January (and for many of us long before that), the focus of the Thoroughbred racing ecosystem shifts to the Triple Crown races and the 3-year-olds on the road to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve.
