all in Triple Crown

Every year, handicappers, gamblers, and racing fans alike pore over the past performances for the Kentucky Derby hoping to see something in one of the contenders that almost nobody else sees.

Tom Pedulla of America’s Best Racing uses a Tale of the Tape to compare and contrast top 3-year-olds Funny Cide, the 2003 Kentucky Derby winner, and Tiz the Law, this year’s huge Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve favorite.

The long-awaited 146th running of the $3 million, Grade 1 Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve at Churchill Downs drew 17 horses – and also Tiz the Law, for a total of 18.

Welcome to a Kentucky Derby like no other.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve at Churchill Downs is not being run on the first Saturday in May for the first time since 1945. In addition, it will provide the second leg of the Triple Crown instead of the traditional opening leg.

Better late than never, the $3 million, Grade 1 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodward Reserve will finally take place on Saturday, Sept. 5 at Churchill Downs, four months later than its traditional date on the first Saturday in May.
