all in Triple Crown

The Grade 3, $150,000 Matt Winn Stakes Saturday at Churchill Downs is a newly minted points race on the Road to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve, which takes place on Sept. 5 this year.

Saturday’s $150,000, Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs stands as the marquee race for 3-year-olds during the iconic Louisville track’s spring meet. Yes, you read that right – with the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve postponed until Sept.

At the beginning of 1988, the attention of the racing world was focused - as usual - on the road to the Kentucky Derby. At the time, if you had asked racing fans to predict the winner of the 114th run for the roses, you might have heard support for Tejano, a four-time graded stakes winner in 1987;  Forty Niner, the champion 2-year-old male; or perhaps Success Express, winner of the 1987 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

The COVID-19 pandemic turned horse racing upside down, but a sense of normalcy has begun to return with the reopening of tracks like Churchill Downs in recent weeks. This Saturday the track hosts the Matt Winn Stakes, which in any other year is an ordinary Grade 3 race for 3-year-olds but this year is a prep for the Sept.

There will indeed be a 2020 version of the Triple Crown, though this time the last shall be first.

The New York Racing Association has announced the $1 million Belmont Stakes will be contested June 20 at Belmont Park without fans, making it the opening leg of a series that has been shuffled by the COVID-19 pandemic.
