all in Triple Crown

The 145th Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve proved to be both puzzling and shocking when stewards disqualified front-running Maximum Security for interference and declared seemingly impossible longshot Country House as the winner on Saturday at Churchill Downs.

Cloudy skies and rain in the forecast for Saturday afternoon could not dampen the spirits of racing fans at Churchill Downs for the 145th  Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve. America’s Best Racing’s Penelope Miller was on hand to capture some of the most fashionable looks from the first Saturday in May as well as plenty of smiles.

The minute I heard their voices, I knew exactly who they were and yet I had never met them before. I saw them on TV the night before. Local Louisville station WHAS was featuring “Derby for Dummies” and sending two of their newest employees to the Kentucky Derby for the first time. It’s easy to pick out a newbie at the Derby. There is a certain level of excitement in their voice and an aura about them that radiates joy and excitement. I was standing at the rail on the backside for the morning workouts and turned around to check them out. I said “I KNOW YOU!

NOTE: Omaha Beach was scratched from the Kentucky Derby on May 1 due to an entrapped epiglottis.

Taylor Cambra sits and looks you right in the eye. “I was a really bad kid in school from the first grade. I was naughty enough that my teachers had to call my parents often. They had to come up with a solution, so my father always took me to the track in the morning before school. It ended up going from a punishment to more of a privilege. I loved going to the track.”

Once upon a time, a long time ago, the Kentucky Derby was a regional race that lacked the international prestige it boasts today. There was no such thing as a Road to the Kentucky Derby; literally any horse could contest the race if their owners were willing to pay the entry fee.
