The Belmont Stakes is always one of the most exciting events on horse racing’s calendar, and this year is extra thrilling since a Triple Crown is on the line with Justify. Add in a sensational group of top races leading up to the main event, and you can bet that Belmont Park is the place to be on June 9.

They keep looking for the signs; signs that the remarkable feats Justify has been pulling off are starting to take their toll. Logic says they should, because when a horse who is still just baby is asked to pack five races into about a 90-day span — including two of the toughest tests in his sport — at some point fatigue should start to make itself known.

Jose Ortiz, on a fast track to superstardom at age 24 after winning his first Eclipse Award as North America’s outstanding jockey, is taking followers of America’s Best Racing along for the ride this year by writing a diary with Tom Pedulla.

Mike Smith, 52, became the second-oldest jockey to win the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve when he guided Justify to an authoritative 2 ½-length victory on May 5. Bill Shoemaker was 54 when he brought home longshot Ferdinand in 1986. It was the second Derby victory for Smith, who shocked the world with 50-1 longshot Giacomo in 2005.
