It’s not often that you get to see 2-year-olds run 1 1/8 miles in a graded stakes race because — quite simply — the only race held under those conditions in North America each year is the $250,000, Grade 2 Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – In a sense, the greatest challenge for a Kentucky Derby winner comes after the youngster is draped in a blanket of red roses.

The 3-year-old almost surely ran the best race of his young career on the first Saturday in May. Then he is asked to produce a similar huge effort several more times if he is to win the Eclipse Award as the champion of his class.

The stately Japanese White Pine towers over the paddock walking ring offering beauty, shade and comfort. The tree is believed to be almost 190 years old and is a stately remnant from the 650 acre estate of New York attorney William DeForest Manice.
