all in Triple Crown

The week leading up to and including the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands usually draws the most national media attention to the sport of Thoroughbred racing, and this year will be no different as NBC Sports Group is set to provide 15 ½ hours of television broadcasts, supplemented by extensive coverage from other TV, radio, and online networks.

A lot of factors affect the outcome of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands, and the post position draw is one of the most impactful, wreaking havoc on the nerves of owners, trainers and jockeys of Derby hopefuls. Post positions are assigned randomly, but their effect on a horse’s chance at wearing the roses seems to be far from arbitrary.

June will mark 20 years since Javier Castellano arrived in the U.S. from his native Venezuela at age 19, and his trophy collection is ever expanding, topped off by the last four Eclipse Awards as outstanding jockey. He is closing in on 5,000 career victories, including many of the most important races in America.

The Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands is Saturday, May 6, with television coverage on NBC expected to peak at about 18 million viewers as post time nears for the first jewel of the Triple Crown. By that point most of the viewers will be familiar with most of the horses as well as many of the jockeys and trainers, but there is considerably less written about the owners of the Derby runners.

Kentucky Derby day is one of the biggest days on the party calendar every year; friends and families gather, put on their best hats, drink mint juleps and root on their favorite horses in the run for the roses.
