all in Triple Crown

The Grade 2, $350,000 Lambholm South Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park marks the sophomore debut for Eclipse Award winning 2-year-old male Classic Empire, who won four of five races last year including the Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

Whether it’s the run up to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands or the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series, there’s great racing action nearly every weekend of the year. Starting this year, America’s Best Racing is challenging some of the brightest minds in horse betting to come up with their top three picks for key races leading up to the Derby and the Breeders’ Cup.

The 73rd running of the Grade 3 Lecomte Stakes is not only a race on the Road to the Kentucky Derby points series, it kicks off the Louisiana Derby prep season at Fair Grounds. Twelve 3-year olds, many entering the race off wins or runner-up finishes, signed up. A quintet have run well in stakes recently, led by Louisiana Juvenile Stakes winner Saint's Fan, a race for Louisiana-breds only.

Making the Grade, which will run through the 2017 Belmont Stakes, focuses on the winners or top performers of the big races, usually from the previous weekend, who could impact the next Triple Crown. We’ll be taking a close look at impressive winners and evaluating their chances to win classic races based upon ability, running style, connections (owner, trainer, jockey) and pedigree.

The first step on the 2017 Triple Crown trail in Southern California did not disappoint Jan. 7 at Santa Anita Park.

Reminiscent of several standout races during 2016 in the region, the $100,000, Grade 3 Sham Stakes stretch run featured two horses locked in a duel to the finish line, well clear of the rest of the field.
