LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 12, 2024) – Breeders’ Cup Limited today announced individual $1 million purse increases for two of its marquee races – the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic and the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf – demonstrating the organization’s longstanding commitment to global excellence and the enrichment of Thoroughbred racing.

The projected fields for the March 30 Dubai World Cup program feature a heavy American presence in the big dirt races and a fascinating global cast for the United Arab Emirates Derby, a Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve qualifying race.

Women have played key roles in horse racing since the venerable sport’s earliest days.

Yet few women – or men for that matter – at any level of the sport created a legacy that can rival the respect and importance of Marylou Whitney.

Whitney, who died July 19, 2019, at age 93, did so much more than simply race in the famed Eton blue and brown silks. She became the first woman in 80 years to breed and own a Kentucky Oaks winner. She won the Belmont Stakes and Travers in the same year.

Welcome to 2024 Kentucky Derby Prospect Profiles, where we’ll take a look each week at a recent winner on the Triple Crown trail, usually from races on the Road to the Kentucky Derby schedule that offer qualifying points for the first leg of the series. The 1 ¼-mile Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve will be held May 4, 2024, at Churchill Downs.

Tom Pedulla is interviewing prominent owners, trainers and jockeys as they travel the Road to the 150th Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve May 4 at Churchill Downs.
