In this third edition of this blog for the 2024 run for the roses, the focus is on the key Derby prep races on Feb. 3 as well as a few other promising 3-year-olds from recent weeks.

Welcome to 2024 Kentucky Derby Prospect Profiles, where we’ll take a look each week at a recent winner on the Triple Crown trail, usually from the Road to the Kentucky Derby schedule that offers qualifying points for the first leg of the series. The 1 ¼-mile Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve will be held May 4, 2024, at Churchill Downs.

As the newly minted executive director of the Kentucky Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association, Alex Foley knows what is on the minds of his constituents, the trainers, and owners that support the state’s five Thoroughbred racetracks. A son and former assistant to his father, Kentucky-based trainer Greg Foley, Alex is a third-generation horseman.

The grounds of historic Churchill Downs features statues of figures essential to the track and its signature race, the Kentucky Derby: Aristides, the first victor; Barbaro, the fan favorite; and two men seated on benches, one talking and the other listening, beckoning visitors to eavesdrop on their conversation.

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert has often captured the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park, winning the race six times since 2010, but this year’s Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve prep on Feb.
