Thanksgiving dinner had a different feel to it Nov. 23 for trainer Bill Mott and his family.

As most of the family members gathered in Memphis, there was much to give thanks for.

Mott, the patriarch, is closing out one of the finest years in an illustrious Hall of Fame career that dates back to 1973 and is very likely to be rewarded with his fourth Eclipse Award as the outstanding trainer and first since 2011.

Turkey may be on the menu these days, but there will also be the scent of roses in the air. The Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes for 2-year-olds will give the 2-year-olds a race on the host track for the 2024 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve as well some qualifying points for the run for the roses.

One last chance for older dirt horses to claim a marquee victory in 2023 comes Friday in the $600,000 Clark Stakes Presented by Norton Healthcare at Churchill Downs. The Grade 2 race will not change any Eclipse Awards ballots, but it could showcase a major threat for the biggest winter tests in 2024, the Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes, Saudi Cup, and Dubai World Cup.

What defines a champion?

Is it talent; the raw ability that gives an athlete the ability to excel in their sport? Is it accomplishments; the record of achievements that their talent enables them to compile? Or is it something else entirely; an innate desire to perform as well as possible and give your all every time you compete?

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Nov. 20, 2023) – For the 14th straight year, horse racing fans will determine the most popular Thoroughbred of the year via online voting for the Secretariat Vox Populi Award.
