Led by four 2022 Breeders’ Cup winners back to defend their titles, the 205 pre-entries for the 2023 edition of the World Championships match the number of last year’s event and are up 9% from the previous visit to Santa Anita Park in 2019.

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) today announced the launch of a new campaign, “Safety Takes The Lead,” highlighting the sport’s recent enhanced safety and welfare protocols, as well as its commitment to do more.

The campaign features a new comprehensive safety section on the NTRA website which includes the latest news on safety and welfare programs, videos, and relevant links.

The culmination of horse racing’s second season (following the conclusion of the Triple Crown in June) is upon us, and the 2023 Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic set for Nov. 4 at Santa Anita Park is shaping up a very competitive and exciting race befitting the 40th anniversary of the World Championships.

The story of Skip Away begins with Carolyn Hine, wife of late Hall of Fame trainer Sonny Hine, wishing for a white Thoroughbred.

Carolyn has diminished eyesight and wanted to be able to follow her horse beyond her blazing red and yellow silks. Sonny explained that white horses are extremely hard to find, but he attended a sale for 2-year-olds at Calder Race Course in Miami to see whether he might find a modestly priced gray horse that could run a bit.

The important and challenging task of assessing the health of more than 200 possible candidates for the 14 Breeders’ Cup races has already begun.

Breeders’ Cup Limited announced Oct. 24 that it has introduced a new protocol in which its Veterinary Review Team has already conducted an initial round of medical checks for potential starters.
