On Aug. 16 the owner who helped bring so many fans to the sport died at age 88 at his home in Bel Air, Calif., surrounded by family and friends.

The Alabama Stakes has long been one of the most important races in the United States for 3-year-old fillies and the list of past winners reads like a who’s who of Distaff stars through the decades.
