World history would make the 1940s as the decade of war, starting with the Nazi invasion of Poland in September 1939 and ending with the descent into a conflict that left the planet cold with fear at times. On the racetrack, the decade was one of Triple Crown winners – four in total, the most of any decade so far – yet those years were rich with great performances, a long list of great horses vying for the hearts and minds of the fans that stood trackside.

Emotions were pulling trainer Chad Brown in all kinds of directions as he sat in a clubhouse box seat during the 85th running of the $500,000 Grade 1 Diana Stakes at Saratoga Race Course.

Saratoga’s 2023 meet kicked off Thursday and opening weekend is highlighted by the Grade 1 Diana Stakes, one of the most important stakes races for fillies and mares on the grass, among three graded races on Saturday’s card.

The 2023 meet at Colonial Downs began July 13 and the New Kent, Va. racetrack traditionally offers some of the best turf racing in the country. The action heats up quickly as Colonial’s Saturday card features four turf stakes races, each with a purse of $125,000, for Virginia-bred or Virginia-sired runners.

The history of horse racing is filled with rags-to-riches stories of jockeys, trainers, and horses that rise from humble beginnings to achieve success at the highest levels of the sport.

Few such stories can compare with that of the remarkable gelding Lava Man, who went from claimer to Hall of Famer to dominate California horse racing for much of three unforgettable years.
