It might be Frankie Dettori’s farewell tour but he is producing some of his finest work and an 80th Royal Ascot winner came his way when Porta Fortuna obliged in the Group 3 Albany Stakes.

The filly provided trainer Donnacha O’Brien with a memorable first winner at the meeting, but it was hard not to escape Frankie fever as he entered the winner’s enclosure bellowing: “Eighty! Eighty!”

Frankie Dettori enjoyed a memorable ninth Gold Cup success on his final ride in the race aboard the John and Thady Gosden-trained Courage Mon Ami.

The rider, who is to retire at the end of the season, pushed the unbeaten son of Frankel out to defeat Coltrane and land the biggest prize June 22 at Royal Ascot.

The year 1973 is best remembered for the Triple Crown heroics of Secretariat.

Yet that same year also gave American racing fans their first glimpse of another great champion of that era.

The United States struck for the first time at Royal Ascot this year when Crimson Advocate narrowly held on to win the June 21 Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes ahead of Relief Rally in a thrilling finish.

In the sport of horse racing, a great deal of emphasis is placed on winning the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes, the three races that comprise the coveted U.S. Triple Crown.
