SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Eight new members have been elected to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.

The Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve is rightfully known as the most exciting two minutes in sports; once the Churchill Downs starting gate springs open anything can (and often does) happen. For the 18 3-year-old Thoroughbreds competing in 2023 it is one of the most important moments of their lives, racing luck can make or break their Derby run from the start.

His best horse may have been gray, but for the most part there was no gray area when it came to people’s feelings about trainer Grover Greer “Bud” Delp.

The Maryland native was outspoken, irreverent, and controversial. He had a personality that divided people into two separate camps: those who loved him and those who had no use for him.

The common ground, though, was respect for his ability as a trainer.

While horseplayers, handicappers, and public touts have all the fun sifting through their facts and figures for the 149th Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve coming up May 6, we poor ink-stained wretches of the Fourth Estate must sit around twiddling our thumbs, wondering what kind of result we'll be stuck with and praying it will be a tale our grandchildren can tell.
