Havre de Grace possessed talent in such abundance she brought Larry Jones out of retirement to train her in 2011.

She never lost a race against fillies and mares. She was a two-time champion, winning some of the most prestigious races in her division, as well as a couple of big ones against males. She never raced outside of New York, but demonstrated her versatility by winning races at six different tracks within the state.

Her name was Maskette and, as her accomplishments suggest, she was fast, talented, durable, and downright unstoppable when at her best.

It appears Breeders’ Cup fans will get another chance in November to back Modern Games, the colt who won the 2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf while his frustrated backers settled for refunds as he ran for purse money only.

Whether rooting on his 2-year-old colt Curly Jack or his alma mater Notre Dame in a college football game, Mike McLoughlin cheered for winners Sept. 17.
