The fields for the 14 races that comprise the Breeders’ Cup World Championships really begin to come into focus in summer and fall and this regular feature will offer a snapshot profile of one of the previous weekend’s standout stars.

The $1 million, Grade 1 Ricoh Woodbine Mile Stakes at Woodbine is one of the marquee turf races for milers in North America and regularly attracts elite turf horses from Europe as well.

Mike Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman clinched the Del Mar owner title some time ago, and they finished up in style. Cave Rock and Havnameltdown ran 1-2 for them in the Sept.

Red Knight was making just his second start off a year’s layoff when he lined up for the $694,180 Kentucky Turf Cup Stakes at Kentucky Downs Sept. 10, but trainer Mike Maker said he felt “he’d be competitive.”

If you’re looking for big value and even bigger fields then few options are better than Kentucky Downs. The short but lucrative turf-only meet draws full and contentious fields from its stakes right down to claimers. On Saturday, distance turf stars will get their chance to chase a $1 million purse in the Kentucky Turf Cup Stakes at 1 ½ miles.
