Coal Battle won the war against 2-1 favorite Speed King down the stretch by a half-length to win the $300,000 Springboard Mile Stakes, the marquee race for 2-year-olds at Remington Park on the track's final night of the 2024 season.

Martin J. “Matt” Winn rarely took no for an answer.

In 1902, the Churchill Downs racing facility was in serious financial trouble and in danger of closing. Winn assembled a group of local investors, bought the track, and the right to the name the Kentucky Derby.

The Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby took a sideways turn Dec. 11 as a filly, Myriad Love, scored her third win without loss in the series’ second leg, the Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushun, at Kawasaki Racecourse.

Myriad Love earned 20 points to jump to the top of the leaderboard. Natural Rise, winner of the first race, finished fourth in the Zen-Nippon, adding four points to his previous 10 to stand in second place.

Horsemen wondering if their 2-year-old can hold his own around two turns in stakes company can have their questions answered Friday night in the Remington Springboard Mile.

Flavien Prat set the single-season stakes record on Dec. 7, breaking the previous record of 79 set by Irad Ortiz Jr. in 2022, and tied Jerry Bailey for the single-season graded stakes record with 55.
