The Cheltenham festival is now just a few weeks away as anticipation continues to build among horse racing fans worldwide. Gamblers are getting involved on online sports betting sites, even overseas, on what is one of the biggest events on the racing calendar each year. Markets have now been formed and many expected runners are gaining support, but many are wondering who are the key horses to follow?

With that being the case, let’s cover two horses that are worth following at the 2021 Cheltenham festival.

When trainer Michael Matz asked owners Gretchen and Roy Jackson which rider they wanted him to pursue for a promising colt named Barbaro, one name topped their list – Edgar Prado.

On a day when the well-fancied Americans thrice played bridesmaid and Japan celebrated twice, the Saudi Cup stayed home thanks to the efforts of a British trainer and a 21-year-old, ginger-haired Irish jockey.

Perhaps the weather had a hand, too, as Mishriff, racing for Saudi Arabia’s Prince Faisal, wore down heavily favored Charlatan in the closing yards of the $20 million Saudi Cup Feb. 20, winning by one length.

Tom Pedulla is interviewing prominent owners, trainers and jockeys for America’s Best Racing as they travel the Road to the 147th Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve on May 1 at Churchill Downs.

In an era when timing and spacing are the preferred words and horses only run a handful of times a year, it generally takes some extraordinary circumstances to set up a dazzling showdown.

Clearly $20 million falls into the category of an extraordinary circumstance.
