As the 35th Breeders’ Cup World Championships approached, one of the main storylines involved a European superstar who was planning an overseas jaunt with an elusive goal in her sights.

The Breeders’ Cup World Championships serves as the year-end Super Bowl of Thoroughbred racing, a two-day event that brings together the best horses, trainers, jockeys, and owners from across the globe for 14 championship races that anchor a betting extravaganza.

The 2024 Juddmonte Spinster Stakes on Sunday has drawn a six-horse field of fillies and mares headlined by Idiomatic, the defending winner of the race.

While racing at Keeneland during the upcoming weekend takes the spotlight with eight “Win and You’re In” Breeders’ Cup races scheduled over its three-day Fall Stars weekend, there are 12 more qualifying preps on tap in New York, California, and France as well, which makes for a truly spectacular first full weekend of October in North American horse racing.

This Saturday, the 39th running of the Coolmore Turf Mile Stakes at Keeneland carries a special designation. Its purse has been boosted to $1.25 million, making it the richest race in the storied history of the track not including the Breeders' Cup. This one-mile turf test, first held in 1986, has increasingly become a highlight of Keeneland’s fall meet ever since.
