After a weekend featuring one of the most important prep races for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic wrapped up with Arthur’s Ride winning the Whitney Stakes, attention turns to turf racing this upcoming weekend with three Challenge Series preps on the schedule.

The fields for the 14 races that comprise the Breeders’ Cup World Championships really begin to come into focus in summer and fall. This regular feature will offer a snapshot profile of one of the previous weekend’s standout stars, usually a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” Challenge Series winner, and exploring their chances to win a targeted race Nov. 1-2 at Del Mar.

“Who is it laughs at years that flow?

Who is it always gets the dough?

Whose only creed is go and go?

Exterminator.”

The above verse, part of a short poem titled “Old Bones,” was affectionately written by Guy McGee and published in the Daily Racing Form on June 22, 1922. Through the years, relatively few racehorses have inspired people to publish poetry in their honor, but then again, few horses have ever sparked the imagination of racing fans quite like Old Bones, the legendary Exterminator.

In his first stakes appearance, Arthur's Ride handled the class jump with ease and dominated the $1 million Grade 1 Whitney Stakes in front-running fashion Aug. 3 at Saratoga Race Course.
