Top Canadian jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson made history in the fifth race at Woodbine July 11, breaking Hall of Famer Julie Krone’s record to become the all-time leader by purse earnings among women riders in racing history, and you couldn’t have scripted it any better.

The experience of this year’s Irish Derby day June 30 at the Curragh as well as the continued flat performance of pari-mutuel wagering in North America has only reinforced my belief that racing is missing out on its best chance in years to bring new people into the sport by not fully embracing fixed-odds wagering.

Let me explain.

Saratoga Race Course is renowned for its terrific 2-year-old racing, and all of the big barns west of the Mississippi plus some of the smaller stables with a nice juvenile or two target the meeting in upstate New York. It doesn’t take long for the 2-year-old action to swing into high gear as the Grade 3 Sanford Stakes is one of three featured stakes on the first Saturday card of the meet.

The fields for the 14 races that comprise the Breeders’ Cup World Championships really begin to come into focus in summer and fall. This regular feature will offer a snapshot profile of one of the previous weekend’s standout stars, usually a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” Challenge Series winner, and whether I’m buying or selling their chances to win Nov. 1-2 at Del Mar.
