all in Legends

If you’re familiar with Sword Dancer through the stakes named in his honor at Saratoga, then you may not know the real story behind the horse.

The Sword Dancer Stakes, run in late August, is a Grade 1 event that’s an altogether fitting tribute to the great champion of the 1950s.

In 1864, New York businessman William R. Travers joined John Morrissey, Leonard Jerome, and other prominent men in building Saratoga Race Course, the historic racetrack now home to many of the sport’s biggest stakes each year.

There was no shortage of superlatives tossed around before, during, and after the 1998 edition of the Breeders’ Cup Classic, and for good reason.

“Best field I’ve ever seen,” Seth Hancock, president of Claiborne Farm on co-owner of one of the 10 Classic runners (Arch), told BloodHorse before the race. “You put up the money and you are going to get the best of the best.”

Known for her consistency, grit, and unmatched will to win, Monomoy Girl captured the hearts of racing fans around the world. Her 10 graded stakes wins, including seven Grade 1s, not only solidified her status as one of the greatest female racehorses of her generation but also added a crowning achievement to an already illustrious career.

Once upon a time, a long time ago, there were Thoroughbreds that could carry heavy weight assignments, set multiple track records, run 16 to 20 times a year … then come back the next year, and the next year, and do it all again.

In the modern world of horse racing – an era in which the connections of champion racehorses carefully pick their spots and rarely race more often than once a month – it can be incredible to reflect on the careers of true “iron horses” like Discovery.
