During her legendary 19-race win streak, the Hall of Fame mare Zenyatta had more than a few close calls where she seized victory from the jaws of defeat. It was to be expected – her late-running style usually ensured that she took the lead very late in her races, resulting in heart-pounding finishes that both concerned and delighted her numerous fans.

The 2022 class of inductees into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame included only two contemporary honorees, both of them equine. But those honorees were champions Beholder and Tepin, ensuring the ceremony was a crowd-pleaser.   

Even some of the most casual fans of horse racing are familiar with Seabiscuit and his legendary match race against War Admiral in 1938.

There was excitement and uncertainty entering the inaugural Breeders’ Cup in 1984, but the initial championship had exceeded the hype even before it came to an unforgettable conclusion when three tenacious racehorses rumbled toward the Breeders’ Cup Classic finish line unwilling to give an inch.

One of the great ironies tied into horse racing involves how triumph and tragedy can be woven together.

Even at its most distressing moments, racing can sometimes offer a measure of joy, as muted as it might be.

The 1990 Breeders’ Cup Distaff will always be remembered for the heartbreaking tragedy of the fatal injury of Go for Wand. Yet on that fateful October afternoon at Belmont Park, what is often overlooked was the triumph that belonged to the gallant mare Bayakoa.
