all in Legends

Although the three Triple Crown races have existed since the 1800s, and hundreds of individual horses have added their names to the lists of winners, only 12 fillies in history have won a Triple Crown race.

Those victories, though more frequent in the early years, have been few and far between; in fact, just five fillies have won a Triple Crown race during the last 97 years.

This marks the latest edition of “Stackin’ Cheddar: Looking Back”, a new biweekly series on America’s Best Racing. Here, we’ll look back on an early race in the careers of some of the greatest horses of all time, including spots where they went off at a big price.

Whitmore, one of the most popular and successful horses in Oaklawn Park’s history, will be honored by the track Saturday, March 19, with Whitmore Day. Much of Whitmore’s best work came at Oaklawn, where he compiled a 9-6-1 record from 16 starts as he developed into the country’s champion male sprinter of 2020 and the winner of that year’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Keeneland.

The long and glorious history of horse racing is filled with the tales of racing’s many champions.

Then there’s Alydar.

Alydar ranks as one of the most famous racehorses of the last six decades. He was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 1989. Yet he was never a champion, for one exceptional reason.

“Once upon a time, there was a horse named Kelso. But only once.”

Of the many lines Joe Hirsch wrote for the Daily Racing Form from 1954 until he retired as executive columnist in 2003, perhaps that one says the most about the man. Simple yet elegant, it reflects Hirsch’s immense respect for the noble Kelso and his standing in a tradition-rich sport.
