all in Legends

Perry Wayne Ouzts has won more than 7,000 races since he began his career as a professional jockey in 1973, earning his first win in March of that year at Beulah Park. He ranks seventh all time among North American jockeys by victories with 7,081 behind five U.S. Racing Hall of Famers and one member of the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame.

Edward Plunket Taylor was a brewery magnate, financier, and legendary entrepreneur who was one of Canada's richest men. A world figure in Thoroughbred racing and breeding, E. P.'s business approach to the sport would come to shape modern Thoroughbred racing, not only in Canada but worldwide.

The year 1969 was one of those special years that produced several outstanding 3-year-olds.

One was royalty.

Another was a champion.

Jose Santos began riding at the tender age of 14. After competing in his native Chile and then Colombia, he came to the United States with high hopes in 1984. Eight months after his arrival, he was in despair.

Business at the Florida tracks was bad; his spirits were worse.

“I was not doing anything,” he said. “I had tough times.”

His ability, though, had not gone completely unnoticed. P.J. Simms, a trainer in search of a rider he could depend on, spotted his potential.

“You help me,” he told Santos, “and I will help you.”

As remarkable as Pat Day’s accomplishments were as a jockey, his personal transformation is even more so.

For much of his young life, Day appeared to be on a path to destruction. He sensed a tremendous void but could not determine what it was.

“I thought it could be found in the sordid lifestyle of alcohol and drugs and carrying on,” he said. “It wasn’t.”
