all in Legends

Bobby Frankel’s success started with his unending love for the animals he trained. It was almost as if he was able to establish a personal connection with every horse in the barn.

“Bobby just had a natural gift, a natural feel, for not only training horses but for animals in general,” said Chad Brown, a former assistant who has established himself as a multiple Eclipse Award-winning trainer. “He could almost sense what they were thinking and feeling.”

At the beginning of 1988, the attention of the racing world was focused - as usual - on the road to the Kentucky Derby. At the time, if you had asked racing fans to predict the winner of the 114th run for the roses, you might have heard support for Tejano, a four-time graded stakes winner in 1987;  Forty Niner, the champion 2-year-old male; or perhaps Success Express, winner of the 1987 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

How many men in the history of horse racing can claim to have bred the greatest colt and the greatest filly of their time?

Before you answer “no one” in the assumption that such a feat just isn’t possible, allow us to introduce you to August Belmont II, whose contributions to the sport were so vast that he was one of the inaugural “Pillars of the Turf” inductees into the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame.

Seven new members have been elected to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame including the contemporary selections of trainer Mark Casse and two-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan.

The class of 2020 also includes jockey Darrel McHargue and racehorse Tom Bowling via the Historic Review Committee; and Pillars of the Turf selections Alice Headley Chandler, J. Keene Daingerfield, Jr., and George D. Widener Jr.

Like the titanic battles of Affirmed and Alydar and Sunday Silence and Easy Goer, undefeated Colin owes much of his greatness to archrival Fair Play. Although he could never defeat Colin, Fair Play's game resilience provided Colin with a most formidable adversary.
