all in Legends

The first of Cigar’s 15 stakes wins came at 9-1 odds in the race that now bears his name, the Cigar Mile Handicap, which goes to show how pivotal the 1994 edition of Aqueduct’s NYRA Mile would be for the horse, his connections, and for Thoroughbred racing at large over the next two years.

For many people, 74 years represents a lifetime. For Maximilian Justice Hirsch, 74 years simply represented the number of years that he was a professional horseman in the sport of horse racing, a remarkable testament to both his longevity and his love for horses.

Born in Texas on July 30, 1880, Max Hirsch worked with horses from an early age and rode in unofficial races as a young boy before taking his talents to the major-league tracks on the East Coast in 1895.

For anyone struggling daily against alcohol and substance abuse, no story can be more heartening than the fall and rise of Jerry Bailey.

For Jenine Sahadi, life at the racetrack has come full circle.

After graduating from college, she began working at Hollywood Park, filling a variety of roles in marketing and publicity for track CEO Marje Everett.

“I had so much respect for Marje and she treated me like one of her children,” Sahadi said. “She loved the game and was so smart. I learned so much from her.”

Now, at the age of 55, she’s working in the racing office at Del Mar as a horseman’s liaison.

Jerry Bailey won seven Eclipse Awards, 15 Breeders' Cup races and six Triple Crown events during his Hall of Fame riding career, yet he has no hesitation in narrowing down the biggest upset of his career.
