all in Legends

How many times have some of the greatest sporting events in America been held? The Super Bowl is relatively young, having been contested 52 times. The World Series of Major League Baseball is more than twice that old with 113 editions in the history books.

The sports world is filled with events that are regarded as storybook tales. They are the times when heartwarming stories unfold as if they are scripted and not chapters of everyday life where skill, talent, and luck determine the outcome.

The reality, of course, is that storybook finishes are simply for storybooks. As much it would be so fitting or grand for something to happen, that alone is not enough reason to alter fate.

That lesson was painfully taught in 1999 when a 3-year-old colt named Charismatic chased a Triple Crown sweep.

He stands alone in the annals of Thoroughbred racing, the only Triple Crown winner sired by a Triple Crown winner.

Omaha had big shoes to fill when he was foaled at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Ky. on March 24, 1932. His daddy was 1930 Triple Crown winner Gallant Fox who scored nine victories in 10 races and had become the greatest money winner in the history of American racing.

The Longines Kentucky Oaks is the marquee race for 3-year-old fillies and the sister race to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve, taking place on the Friday before the run for the roses each year.

In advance of the 144th Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve, ABR’s Dan Tordjman takes a look back at the 10 most recent winners of the run for the roses and checks in on their current endeavors, be they at stud, in training, in the case of Always Dreaming, or, in Mine That Bird’s case, simply living the R ‘n’ R life of a retired Derby winner.
