Rachel Alexandra was led out of her barn, her coat glistening and dappled and a bit lighter than when she was racing. As she stood placidly in the morning sun, she was not bothered in the slightest by the two visitors fawning over her. She has held her weight extremely well, and she still has that same bright eye her fans remember during her glory days.

Meadow Star surely enjoyed a stellar racing career.

She won her first nine starts. Eight of them were stakes and four were Grade 1s.

She was a decisive winner by five lengths in the 1990 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and the undefeated filly was a unanimous choice as the year’s champion 2-year-old filly.

At 3, she was tested against colts in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial Stakes, in which she finished fourth and suffered her first defeat. Returned to distaff competition after that setback, she romped by six lengths in the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes.

The 1970s were an unforgettable decade for Thoroughbred racing.

Goldikova, a three-time Breeders' Cup Mile winner and two-time Eclipse Award winner, died on Jan. 6, 2021, at age 16. America's Best Racing is sharing a profile of the Irish-bred superstar written prior to her induction into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 2017.

The physical package was not one that inspired awe. However, the attitude that came with it might as well have been on a billboard proclaiming the benefits of brute force.
