Motivation and inspiration are always close at hand for Fraser Aebly.

When he slipped on the sky-blue silks featuring an ornate white butterfly on the front, along with white and black hoops, the 19-year-old apprentice rider was, as always, focused on giving his horse the best shot at winning the race.

Trainer Bob Baffert dominates the Grade 2 $200,000 Los Alamitos Futurity, a race he has now won 14 times thanks to his victory with Wynstock Dec. 16 at Los Alamitos Race Course.

In a two-horse throwdown, Otto the Conqueror outdueled the previously unbeaten Glengarry and inched away to post a three-quarters of a length victory in the $300,000 Remington Springboard Mile Stakes on Dec. 15.

Time is running out on 2-year-olds hoping to post a stakes win before they turn 3 on Jan. 1. One of those last opportunities, Friday’s Remington Springboard Mile, offers the possibility of black-type status plus a chance to collect qualifying points toward a start in the 2024 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve. In descending value, 10-5-3-2-1 qualifying points will be awarded to the top five finishers in the two-turn test.

This feature provides a capsule look at three horses who are heating up on the Triple Crown trail and three horses whose chances for the 2024 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve are not quite as strong as they were a few weeks ago.
