The field for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic begins to take shape in early summer after the Triple Crown races conclude and, in many ways, the road to the $6 million race begins in earnest with the Stephen Foster Stakes in June at Churchill Downs.

The first day of the weekend is relished by most, but for the people behind Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's Godolphin operation, it has become a time to celebrate.

A champion in Mexico, St. George Stable's Letruska now finds herself contending—if not leading—for a championship this year as North America's outstanding older dirt female.

The road to the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic heats up this Saturday, with the 40th running of the Grade 2 Stephen Foster Stakes at Churchill Downs. The race carries a purse of $600,000 and will be run at 1 ⅛ miles on dirt.

With the major summer tests for 3-year-olds looming on the horizon, Preakness Stakes winner Rombauer  will be returning to the East Coast.
