While racing at Keeneland during the upcoming weekend takes the spotlight with eight “Win and You’re In” Breeders’ Cup races scheduled over its three-day Fall Stars weekend, there are 12 more qualifying preps on tap in New York, California, and France as well, which makes for a truly spectacular first full weekend of October in North American horse racing.

This Saturday, the 39th running of the Coolmore Turf Mile Stakes at Keeneland carries a special designation. Its purse has been boosted to $1.25 million, making it the richest race in the storied history of the track not including the Breeders' Cup. This one-mile turf test, first held in 1986, has increasingly become a highlight of Keeneland’s fall meet ever since.

Forever Young easily passed his entrance exam for the Nov. 2 Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic with a no-nonsense victory Oct. 2 in the Japan Dirt Classic at Oi Racecourse.

His connections said they were confident before the race, relieved afterward, and expect even more from Forever Young at Del Mar.

New York’s top representative for the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Juvenile presented by TAA should be decided Saturday when 10 2-year-olds square off in the $500,000 Champagne Stakes at Aqueduct’s Belmont at the Big A meeting.

Each week a panel of media members, horseplayers, and Breeders’ Cup World Championships officials release a poll tabulating their votes ranking the top contenders for the 2024 Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic. The results are a weekly rating of the top 10 horses in contention and are determined by each voter ranking their top 10 horses with points assigned on a descending 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis.
