Catch a Flight Collars Appealing Tale Late to Win San Diego

Catch a Flight reeled in Appealing Tale just before the finish line to win the $200,000 San Diego Handicap on Saturday at Del Mar and record his third graded stakes victory this year.

A 5-year-old horse by Giant’s Causeway, Catch a Flight was given a perfectly timed ride by Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens. He raced in fourth early, launched his winning bid in the stretch and collared the runner-up in the final strides.

Include Betty scored decisively with a powerful closing rally in the $300,000 Mother Goose Stakes on Saturday at Belmont Park to earn her first career Grade 1 win.

A lightning-fast pace early in the 1 1/16-mile race proved a nice setup for Include Betty, whose preferred running style is to utilize her explosive finishing speed for a sustained, late bid.

International Star Sidelined Until Fall

International Star, who was scratched the morning of the Kentucky Derby with the hope that he might start in the Preakness on May 16, was found to have a chip in his left front ankle that will sideline him at least until the fall.

Ken Ramsey, co-owner of New York-bred International Star, said in a text message that the horse exhibited some discomfort in his left front foot on Tuesday morning. X-rays revealed a chip in that ankle.
