all in Racing

Four weeks before the first Saturday in May, Kentucky Derby fever will bloom in Kentucky with Saturday’s running of the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland.

Each week, members of the national media vote on the nation's top contenders on the Triple Crown trail in the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) Top Thoroughbred Poll.

Belmont Park first opened in 1905.

As the grandstand began to crumble in the 1960s, it was closed in 1963. Downstate racing shifted solely to Aqueduct until 1968.

That’s when what was known then as the New Belmont Park was unveiled, just a few months after the opening of the New Madison Square Garden atop Penn Station.

Every day of the year is part of Kentucky Derby season for horse racing fans in the Bluegrass State, but anticipation for the sport’s biggest event really picks up each spring when Keeneland Race Course in Lexington kicks off its April meet with an opening weekend highlighted by the $1 million Toyota Blue Grass Stakes.

This feature provides a capsule look at three horses who are heating up on the Triple Crown trail and three horses whose chances for the 2024 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve are not quite as strong as they were a few weeks ago.

In this seventh edition of this blog for the 2024 run for the roses, the focus is on the key Derby prep races from last weekend on the Triple Crown trail.
