Bernard S. Flint

For about half of his 16 years in the New Orleans Police Department, Flint pulled double duty:  fighting crime and training Thoroughbreds. In 1976, he retired from the police force, where he worked in vice, narcotics, and homicide and headed the robbery-burglary division, to become a full-time trainer.

He is based in Louisville and has won training titles at four Kentucky tracks, Churchill Downs, Keeneland, Turfway Park and Ellis Park. Flint was honored by the Kentucky Thoroughbred media for six consecutive years - 1998 to 2003 - for the most wins in the state.  He won his first race in 1969 at Fair Grounds and secured his first stakes win in 1976 with Pontalba. Flint scored his first major stakes win as owner and trainer and stepped into the national spotlight when He Is A Great Deal upset eventual Kentucky Derby winner Swale in the 1984 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland. Some of the best horses he has trained are graded stakes winners Swept Away, Hurricane Bertie, Hidden Assets and Thunder Bertie.

In 2013 Flint will be sending Seaneen Girl, already a graded stakes winner over the Churchill Down surface, to the Kentucky Oaks.
