Carrying one of the most distinctive nicknames in American racing, "Red Dog" Hartlage has operated a Churchill Down-based stable since 1980. The red comes from the color of his hair and Hartlage says that the "dog" refers to the first horse he trained because "he couldn't run much." Hartlage grew up in Shively, a small blue-collar city southwest of Louisville, and has a loyal group of owners who have supported his stable through the decades. In the 1990s, he turned down an opportunity to be a private trainer because he didn't want to leave his other owners behind.
